Chongqing activates ‘town economy’ model: One town, one IP

Rongchang District of Chongqing has developed three themed towns — Antao Town, Wanling Ancient Town and China Xiabu (Grass Linen) Town — each with its own distinct cultural identity and economic focus.

The “2026 Overseas Chinese Media and Community Leaders Tour of Sichuan and Chongqing — Focusing on the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle” was held in Rongchang District on Sunday.

As the birthplace of Rongchang pottery, one of China’s four famous potteries, Antao Town has more than 800 years of history. The town has gathered master craftsmen to establish workshops and regularly organizes pottery experience activities and ancient kiln study tours.

Meanwhile, it has introduced leading enterprises to upgrade the industry and promote the transformation of traditional pottery into high-end functional ceramics.

Li Qing, chief editor of Papua New Guinea China Press, said, “The ancient pottery-making technique of Antao Town has been upgraded through technological innovation, combining cultural warmth with technological advancement. This model of transforming traditional crafts is highly worthy of overseas promotion.”

Wanling Ancient Town has leveraged its thousand-year history to become a cultural tourism consumption hub. The town regularly holds Dragon Boat Festival races, folk parades and other events, effectively boosting income for local shops and creating jobs for villagers.

Zhu Xin’e, deputy editor-in-chief of China Weekly (Egypt), said, “Wanling Ancient Town has fully preserved the original texture and folk life of a water town, integrating traditional culture into people’s daily lives. This model of ‘living heritage and immersive experience’ is truly appealing to domestic and international tourists.”

Leveraging the thousand-year-old tradition of xiabu – literally “cloth for summer” — China Xiabu Town has built a cultural and creative industry ecosystem.

The town now hosts dozens of Xiabu-related companies, forming a complete industrial chain from weaving and craft innovation to design and sales. It has also created an immersive cultural tourism street to attract consumer spending.

“Rongchang Xiabu has entered the mass consumer market and kept pace with modern trends through market-oriented, fashionable and lifestyle-oriented innovations,” said Guo Jipeng, vice editor-in-chief of New Broad.

Statistics showed that in 2025, Rongchang received 28.8 million tourists, up 44.22 percent year-on-year, with tourism revenue reaching 16.128 billion yuan (about $2.23 billion), up 45.02 percent. The three themed towns have become the core pillars of Rongchang’s ‘town economy’.

Overseas Chinese Media Visit Bashan Grand Canyon, Discovering a New Model of Integrated Culture, Sports, and Tourism Development

Sichuan News Service, June 12 — Clouds drifted among the mountain ridges, while wooden walkways wound their way through the forests. On June 11, representatives of overseas Chinese-language media participating in the “2026 Overseas Chinese Media Sichuan–Chongqing Tour—Focusing on the Development of the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle” visited the Bashan Grand Canyon in Xuanhan County, Dazhou City, Sichuan Province. Amid towering peaks, deep gorges, and rich local traditions, they experienced the unique appeal of cultural tourism where nature and humanity converge in the heart of the Daba Mountains.

Located at the junction of Sichuan, Chongqing, and Shaanxi, the Bashan Grand Canyon is an important birthplace of Ba culture and the only major Tujia ethnic settlement area in Sichuan Province. Situated within China’s north-south climatic transition zone, the region boasts a forest coverage rate of over 80 percent. Its mountains, canyons, streams, waterfalls, and caves form a diverse natural landscape, earning it titles such as the “Hometown of Ba Culture in China,” the “Natural Fold Museum,” and the “Biodiversity Gene Bank of the Daba Mountains.”

Standing at a mountain viewpoint overlooking the scenery, Liu Liping, deputy editor-in-chief of Fiji Daily, admired the layered mountain ranges and winding valleys disappearing into the mist. “My most immediate impression is the deep canyons, steep peaks, and dense forests,” she said.

Wu Mingshan, a guide at the Bashan Grand Canyon Scenic Area, explained that the destination features natural attractions such as Fairy Rock, Elephant Cave, Guanmen Stone, and Pearl Curtain Waterfall, while also preserving Tujia folk customs and legends of Ba culture.

“Culture is the most distinctive characteristic of the Bashan Grand Canyon,” Wu said. Centered on the theme of “The Homeland of Ba Descendants and the Source of Tujia Culture,” the scenic area has developed attractions including the Bashan Light Cultural Museum, the “Flying Over the Grand Canyon” VR Experience Hall, and the multi-dimensional Elephant Cave Experience Space, transforming Ba culture from static displays into immersive experiences.

Sports activities have further unlocked the potential of the region’s mountainous resources. According to Wu, events such as the Bashan Grand Canyon Cycling Hill Climb Masters Race—held along what is known as “China’s Most Beautiful Rural Road”—as well as square dancing competitions and other cultural and sporting activities, have been organized in recent years.

Looking ahead, the scenic area plans to leverage its mountain canyons, forest trails, and boardwalks to introduce more outdoor experiences, including hiking, cycling, mountaineering, and camping.

“The destination offers not only spectacular natural scenery and rich cultural heritage, but also the kinds of sports and recreational experiences that appeal to younger visitors,” Liu said. “It successfully connects landscapes, culture, sports, and consumer experiences, creating a well-rounded travel experience.”

“To better integrate into the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle, the Bashan Grand Canyon Scenic Area has continuously worked to improve transportation access,” said Yang Lei, head of the Publicity and Culture Section of the Dazhou Culture and Tourism Integration Development Center. With major infrastructure projects such as the Xi’an–Chongqing High-Speed Railway progressing, accessibility from key visitor markets including Chengdu, Chongqing, and Xi’an is expected to improve significantly.

Yang added that the Bashan Grand Canyon is currently accelerating its bid to become a National 5A Tourist Attraction, China’s highest rating for scenic destinations. The site has already passed the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s landscape resource evaluation for 5A-level attractions and is now focusing on enhancing resource protection, service quality, tourism products, smart tourism systems, and brand promotion.

“For the Bashan Grand Canyon, pursuing 5A status is not merely about obtaining a rating,” Yang said. “It is also about upgrading the overall visitor experience, operational management, and service capabilities to ensure every traveler enjoys a higher-quality journey.”

Millennia-Old Stone Carvings Preserve the Legacy of Ancient Scholars, Overseas Chinese Media Explore the Cultural Heritage of Bazhong

Bazhong, Sichuan, June 11 (China News Service) — Standing in front of the cliffside of the Nankan Grottoes, representatives of overseas Chinese-language media raised their cameras one after another. Sunlight poured onto the thousand-year-old stone carvings, where the faint outlines of Buddha statues could still be seen and the flowing lines of their robes remained clearly defined.

When they reached the Flying Apsaras carvings, Xie Yan, president of Times Weekly (Canada), pointed his camera at the stone wall and carefully examined the details of the sculptures. “After listening to the explanation, I learned that Bazhong has 36 different styles of Flying Apsaras. From what I saw, each one really has a distinct design—truly exquisite,” Xie said.

On June 10, representatives of overseas Chinese-language media participating in the “2026 Overseas Chinese Media Sichuan–Chongqing Tour—Focusing on the Development of the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle” visited Bazhou District in Bazhong City, Sichuan Province. Between the Nankan Grottoes and the Yan Yangchu Memorial Museum, they explored the city’s cultural heritage and historical memory.

The Nankan Grottoes were first constructed during the Sui Dynasty and flourished in the Tang and Song dynasties. They are one of Sichuan’s important surviving grotto temple sites. Yang Luping, head of the Nankan Grottoes interpretation team, introduced that more than 1,000 statues remain, distributed layer by layer along the cliffside according to the terrain. Compared with grotto complexes such as Dunhuang and Longmen, the Nankan Grottoes preserve more of the regional characteristics of Bashu stone carving art, making them important physical evidence for studying the spread of Buddhism and the development of grotto art in southwest China.

“I have visited many grotto sites before, including the Kizil Caves in Xinjiang, the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, and the Longmen Grottoes. Many overseas audiences are familiar with Dunhuang, but not necessarily with the Bashu grottoes,” said Zhu Xinue, deputy editor-in-chief of China Weekly (Egypt). She noted that the Nankan Grottoes revealed a more diverse side of China’s grotto culture. “The existence of similar grottoes in Sichuan and northern China shows that exchanges between these regions were very close at that time. These carvings are beautiful and also bear witness to the cultural exchanges along the ancient Shu Road,” she said.

Inside the Yan Yangchu Memorial Museum, yellowed photographs, precious manuscripts, and historical documents record the extraordinary life of this Chinese educator. Born in Bazhong, Yan Yangchu devoted his life to mass education and rural reconstruction and is known as the “Father of Mass Education.” His educational philosophy and rural development practices influenced many countries and regions and continue to have wide international impact.

For many overseas Chinese media representatives, Yan Yangchu is not an unfamiliar name. In Southeast Asia and North America in particular, his educational ideas are still studied and discussed today. “Yan Yangchu lived in the Philippines for many years and helped many rural communities. There is even a memorial museum dedicated to him there. Even today, the local Chinese community still lays flowers at his memorial every year,” said Cai Youming, editor-in-chief of the Philippine Commercial News. He noted that Yan has significant influence in the Philippines and is widely known among older generations.

From the Nankan Grottoes to the Yan Yangchu Memorial Museum—one preserves millennia of civilization, the other bears witness to modern exploration; one reflects the historical depth of Chinese culture, the other demonstrates the social responsibility of Chinese intellectuals. In recent years, Bazhong has continuously advanced the protection and utilization of its historical and cultural resources through cultural exhibitions, study tours, and digital communication, enabling more people to learn about its heritage.

For the overseas Chinese media representatives, this visit was not only a cultural experience but also a window into observing China’s historical and contemporary development. At the end of the trip, Cai Youming remarked: “Here we not only see stone carving art, but also a Chinese thinker who influenced the world. Such cultural stories deserve to be shared with more overseas audiences.”
